Chengzi Mountain Scenic Area

Chengzi Mountain Scenic Area is located in Liangquan Town, Xifeng County, and is one of the four famous mountains in northern Liaoning. It comprises over 30 large and small peaks, featuring steep, majestic, and rugged terrain with numerous historical relics. The area gets its name from a stone fortress situated on the mountain. The city walls are five to six meters high and seven to eight meters wide, built from large stone blocks. The mountain fortress sits high above with rugged paths, exuding an imposing aura reminiscent of “one man guarding the pass can hold off ten thousand.” The area is covered with dense forests, precipitous cliffs, gurgling springs, birdsong, and ancient pines standing proudly, creating a serene environment. It has been designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, “Chengzi Mountain Fortress,” by the Liaoning Provincial Government due to its well-preserved ancient Goguryeo city ruins from the Tang Dynasty. According to Volume 210 of the “Zizhi Tongjian,” in 668 AD, when Tang forces campaigned in Liaodong, General Xue Li led 3,000 troops to attack the Goguryeo-held Fuyu City (now Chengzi Mountain Fortress), which was situated high on a hill. At the time, other Tang generals advised against the attack due to the small number of troops, but Xue Li said, “It’s not about having many soldiers, but using them wisely!” He then personally led the vanguard, fought fiercely with the Goguryeo army, killed over ten thousand enemies, and achieved a great victory. Today, within the deep valleys and forests of Chengzi Mountain Scenic Area, visitors can still admire well-preserved ancient city walls, water reservoirs, Huangjiu Tavern, military command platforms, horse-running paths, and other Goguryeo mountain fortress ruins, often leaving tourists in awe. The area’s natural landscapes, such as the Welcoming Pine, Sister Pines, Couple Trees, Turtle-Fish Rock, and Canopy Rock Guest, are masterpieces of nature that captivate countless visitors. Additionally, the rare amphibian species “Mountain Stream Newt” (commonly known as the Chinese giant salamander), residing in the scenic area’s streams, is a seldom-seen treasure. The combination of unique pines, peculiar rocks, ancient relics, and these rare creatures are hailed as the Four Wonders of Chengzi Mountain.

Liangquan Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Xifeng County. In 1945, it belonged to Xifeng County; in 1949, it was placed under Fangmu District VI; in 1957, it was split off to form Bingquan Township; in 1961, it was reorganized as a commune; in 1983, it reverted to township status; and in 1985, it was upgraded to a town. Located in the southern part of the county, it is 37 kilometers from the county seat, covering an area of 121 square kilometers with a population of 16,000. The Xifeng–Qingyuan Highway runs through the town. It administers 13 village committees: Liangquan, Quanbei, Tianxing, Zhongxing, Wuja, Changning, Yongquan, Yudian, Qinlian, Desheng, Dexian, Deming, and Bao’an.
