The Tieling City Memorial Hall, also known as the Former Site of the Youth Study Memorial Hall, is located on Hongqi Street, Yinzhou District, Tieling City, Liaoning Province. In September 1979, with the approval of the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the CPC and the Tieling Prefectural Committee, it was established at the former site of Yin'gang Academy Primary School and was listed as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit. In March 1990, Li Peng inscribed the plaque for the memorial hall. The building is a Qing Dynasty-style structure made of blue bricks and wood, with tiled roofs. It was built in 1658 and originally formed part of the central courtyard and a section of the western courtyard of Yin'gang Academy. The central courtyard follows a traditional siheyuan (quadrangle) layout with two levels. The front courtyard includes a gatehouse, main room, and three wing rooms on the east and west sides, each connected by four moon gates. In the spring of 1910, 12-year-old [Zhou Enlai] came here to study with his third uncle, an experience that greatly influenced his later path toward revolution. The memorial hall now serves as a revolutionary commemorative site, a historical relic site, a patriotic education demonstration base, and a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit.

Highlights of the Scenic Area

The east wing room in the front courtyard of the memorial hall was where [Zhou Enlai] studied classical texts in his youth, while the western courtyard was the classroom where he studied. Each courtyard functions as an exhibition area, showcasing [Zhou Enlai]’s time studying in Tieling, his inspections, and his life achievements. It is an important base for revolutionary tradition education.

Zhou Enlai was a Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, and diplomat. He was one of the principal leaders of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Republic of China, one of the founders of the People’s Liberation Army, and the Premier of the People’s Republic of China (1949–1976). Originally from Shaoxing, Zhejiang, he was born in Huai’an, Jiangsu. After graduating from Nankai School in Tianjin in 1917, he went to Japan to study. He returned to China in 1919, entered Nankai University in September, and became a leader of the Tianjin student movement during the May Fourth Movement.
