The prototype story behind “Seventy-Seven Days”
Life is not just about the daily grind; there is also poetry and distant lands
Besides the ice-covered South and North Poles, there is a third pole on our planet where humans cannot survive — Qiangtang. In Tibetan, Qiangtang means the unknown northern wilderness. It lies at the heart of the Roof of the World, at the junction of Tibet, Xinjiang, and Qinghai, with an average altitude of over 5,000 meters. The well-known Hoh Xil is just a small part of Qiangtang.

Gao Xiaosong once said, life is not just about the daily grind; there is also poetry and distant lands. The concrete jungle of the city blinds your eyes, making you think that life is only this. Step away from the hustle and hostility of urban life, and you will see glaciers covering the land, antelopes running freely across the plains, children innocently playing at the foot of mountains under the setting sun, and their crystal-clear eyes. The world is more like a hymn than you can imagine — out there, in the distance.
Whether in terms of geographical distance or emotional experience, this place is truly deserving of being called the distance.
A single trip may not solve the problems of life, but it can change your inner self; and when your inner self changes, some problems may no longer be problems. Perhaps that is the meaning of travel...
Explorer Writer: Yang Liusong, who alone crossed the Qiangtang uninhabited area in 77 days
Yang Liusong, a young man from Shanghai, used a bicycle as his means of transport and carried extremely limited supplies to trek alone across the Qiangtang uninhabited area for 77 days, enduring unimaginable life-and-death trials.
Even the world’s top explorers usually choose a 30-day extreme traverse at most, but Yang Liusong’s crossing had never been done before, with dangers far exceeding those of climbing Mount Everest. Once published, his solo 77-day traverse of the Qiangtang uninhabited area quickly gained a huge readership and garnered widespread attention from the media and readers. It was hailed as the greatest exploration journey in Chinese outdoor sports, elevating China’s exploration movement to the world’s top tier.
What can we do for the soul and the distance?
We want to show the world the most beautiful side of Qiangtang. The endless wilderness, running Tibetan antelopes, ancient glaciers, and sunlight unchanged for millions of years need more people to protect them; dilapidated schools, a lack of teachers, and the hopeful eyes of children need more people to lend a hand.
We want to condense all these pristine things, along with your support and love, into a movie — to turn the story of this 77-day solo crossing of the Qiangtang uninhabited area into China’s first outdoor adventure IMAX film, a Chinese wilderness version of “Life of Pi,” and share it with the world.
The prototype of the female protagonist in the film: Lantian
Lantian graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and is a professional photographer. While hiking in Motuo, Tibet, she fell while photographing the stars and became paralyzed from the waist down. Faced with misfortune, she once thought of giving up on life, but with the encouragement of friends, she regained her spirit and opened a guesthouse in Lhasa. When Yang Liusong was trapped in despair, it was Lantian’s smile from her wheelchair that inspired him to step out of the uninhabited area, step by step.
