Yesterday, experts from the Municipal Food and Drug Administration responded that unless you're wearing diving goggles, it’s not recommended to wear contact lenses while swimming.
Many people who wear contact lenses know that they can easily come off when exposed to water, and the risk is even higher while swimming. Even with swim goggles on, it’s hard to guarantee that no water will get into your eyes. Once water gets in and you rub your eyes, inflammation can easily occur.
Most swimming pool water contains chlorine and other chemicals, and most contact lenses sold on the market are soft lenses, which can absorb these chemicals. Such substances may irritate the cornea and conjunctiva, leading to eye discomfort. In addition, people who wear contact lenses should avoid having long fingernails, as they can not only scratch the lenses but also easily damage the cornea. Women are advised to put in their lenses before applying makeup and remove them before taking it off.
If dust or foreign particles get into your eyes, never rub them forcefully. Instead, wash your hands first, remove the lenses, rinse them, and then reinsert them.
