Whether you're a seasoned rider or just starting out, always prioritize safety. Only by staying safe can you enjoy cycling for longer, with more joy and better health. Every sport carries risks, and without practicing in a scientific and reasonable way, you could seriously harm your body. This is especially true for mountain biking. Below are mountain biking crash safety tips summarized by many riders—hope every rider takes them seriously.
First, speed: always control your speed. Unless you’re in a race, there’s no need to ride too fast. There’s no need to push yourself to that extreme— if you want to experience the thrill of speed, buy a train ticket instead; it’s many times faster than riding a mountain bike.
Second, mindset matters: just like driving, don’t overestimate your skills. Many unexpected situations can’t be avoided or compensated for by skill alone.
Third, take necessary safety precautions. Most people already know this, but it bears repeating: at the very least, always wear a helmet and gloves. These can literally save your life.
Fourth, when riding a mountain bike, try to stick to routes you’re familiar with—ideally trails you’ve walked before. That way, you’ll have a clear understanding of the road conditions.
Fifth, always think ahead. Stay alert to the road conditions in front of you. Many dangers are caused by just a moment of carelessness.
Sixth, unless absolutely necessary, avoid performing “trick moves” on your mountain bike—like riding with no hands, answering your phone, or other stunts. A moment of recklessness could land you right on a patch of banana peel (or worse) and send you tumbling.
Seventh, and most importantly: even if you’ve never fallen, don’t assume you won’t. Always stay alert to the possibility of a crash.
