Mountain Hardwear is one of the world’s leading outdoor brands, renowned for its premium materials, innovative designs, and advanced technology. Headquartered in California, USA, it now also has contract manufacturers in Asia, including Vietnam and India. Its main product lines include outdoor apparel, tents, and sleeping bags.
The year 1997 was relatively calm for Mountain Hardwear, in the sense that the production line introduced nine new tent models, a brand-new base layer clothing series, and quietly revolutionized the design of tents.
The new revolutionary product was called the Tension Shelf. Like other Mountain Hardwear inventions, the new product emphasized simplicity and ease of use. By simply attaching the lightweight Tension Shelf to the tent poles, the overall sturdiness of the tent could be significantly enhanced.
Chief tent designers Martin Zemitis and Paul Kramer certainly knew that similar effects could be achieved by increasing the size and number of tent poles, using multi-point triangular divisions, and adding more anchor points—but all those methods would inevitably increase the weight and bulk of the tent. In the end, they invented the Tension Shelf, which greatly improved the balance and stability of the tent by reinforcing the internal tension structure.
In fact, even before inventing the Tension Shelf, Mountain Hardwear had already made a major breakthrough in fabric materials—developing its proprietary Conduit™ waterproof and breathable membrane [formerly known as Storm Light]. From the moment it was launched, it became as iconic as the brand’s hex nut logo. Initially, Conduit™ was only used in three sleeping bag models, but within five years, over 30 products—including sleeping bags, jackets, gloves, and hats—had incorporated Conduit™ and its lightweight version, Conduit SL™.

From 1994 to the present, Mountain Hardwear has established over 500 retail locations across the United States. Its products are also exported to Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, South America, and Russia. Even though Mountain Hardwear partners with world-class outdoor distributors such as REI and Galyan’s, it has not neglected smaller retailers or specialty shops—because every staff member there takes pride in recommending only the products they’ve personally used and truly believe in.
Andrew Brewer, owner of Onion River Sports in Vermont, USA, said: “They only emphasize one thing: functionality, functionality, and functionality. They don’t push products just to boost sales. For these reasons, they’ve earned the deep trust and respect of their customers.”
That respect is mutual. Simply put, without their passion for the industry and outdoor activities, you wouldn’t be seeing the Mountain Hardwear of today.
Now, Mountain Hardwear sincerely invites outdoor channel distributors to visit the event and experience the unique appeal of this professional outdoor brand firsthand. We will provide an in-depth introduction to our brand philosophy and development journey, showcase the cutting-edge technology and product features of top-tier outdoor gear, and explore agency and distribution partnership opportunities.
