Last updated 2026-11-08 — In recent years, China's television industry has flourished, with a wide variety of entertainment shows. However, one genre that remains largely untouched in China is the outdoor survival challenge show, which has long been popular and thriving in Europe, America, Japan, and South Korea. Among these, the "Man vs. Wild" series hosted by Bear Grylls and produced by the Discovery Channel in the U.S., CBS's "Survivor," and SBS's "Law of the Jungle" hosted by Kim Byung-man from South Korea have all been highly praised by audiences. Meanwhile, this type of television program is almost non-existent in China. To fill this gap, Tianjin TV launched in May 2014 a groundbreaking star-studded scientific adventure and survival challenge show — "Mystery Land."

"Mystery Land" is a program that caters to the audience's curiosity. Its most unique feature is that celebrities lead viewers to explore ten specific regions in China known for their mysterious phenomena. These areas are neither crowded tourist attractions nor picturesque natural landscapes, but rather the ten most mysterious, legendary, and controversial places. Are there really yetis? Are there really lake monsters? Are there really unexplained phenomena? These questions have puzzled the scientific community for years and have also become hot topics among the public. In the show, celebrities will delve into clues of these mysteries, striving to unravel the layers of enigma surrounding these regions, capturing the audience's sense of wonder from beginning to end. If you want to learn about various mysterious phenomena, "Mystery Land" might just provide the answers.

The first stop of the show takes Sha Baoliang, Van Fan, Li Weijia, and Qiangzi to Shennongjia. This mysterious place, famous worldwide for reports of yeti sightings since the time of Qu Yuan, still lacks concrete evidence of the creature despite numerous investigations. The "Mountain Ghost" in the Songs of Chu further adds to its mystique. Meanwhile, Sichuan's Heizhugou, dubbed "China's Bermuda Triangle," boasts the highest adventure index in the outdoor exploration community. Repeated incidents of missing people and livestock are chilling, yet they continue to attract thrill-seeking explorers. Beyond that, in the northwestern desert at the edge of an oasis, the mystery of one of the world’s four great lake monsters — the Monster of Kanas — remains unresolved. And on the other side of China, in Heaven Lake of Changbai Mountain, the volcanic lake monster also poses its own set of enigmas. What’s the truth behind these phenomena? Each episode will feature four different popular celebrities who risk “life and limb” to participate in a 48-hour outdoor survival reality show. How will these stars rely solely on their survival skills in the wilderness? What kinds of challenges will they face in these rarely visited, unpredictable mysteries?

According to Liu Shuang, a top producer at Tianjin TV: “For Tianjin TV, outdoor adventure shows represent a new form of market competitiveness, and 'Mystery Land' fills a void in this genre within China’s industry. Additionally, the production team invited seasoned professionals from the outdoor industry and experts with field survival experience to participate in the show’s production. The celebrities, together with the crew, venture deep into ten of China’s most remote and mysterious locations to film, creating a brand-new format for Chinese celebrity outdoor adventure reality shows.” As early as six months ago, while assembling the filming team, Tianjin TV began experimenting with a special new model. Building on the experienced director team from Tianjin TV’s hit shows "You Are the One" and "Tonight’s Show," the team also recruited several of China’s most seasoned outdoor experts and former special forces veterans. These outdoor specialists underwent months of professional training in television directing and filming, successfully transforming outdoor adventurers into skilled TV directors. This also turned the production team into an all-weather, multi-skilled director unit, greatly ensuring both the outdoor professionalism of the content and the high quality of the visuals.

Every minute of "Mystery Land" brings you endless fresh experiences. The limited airtime cannot fully capture the entire exploration process, so the production team will also publish an exclusive "Mystery Land Collector’s Edition" book through a crowdfunding campaign on crowdfunding platforms, providing a detailed account of everything they experienced.

The "Mystery Land" program, sponsored by Dongfeng Nissan’s new X-Trail, will unveil the mysteries for you. Numerous journeys into the unknown will be presented on Tianjin TV.
