At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Hou Bin, sitting in his wheelchair, pulled the rope by himself, step by step climbed to the base of the main cauldron, and finally lit the Paralympic flame! At that moment, the whole stadium erupted in cheers, and the atmosphere reached its peak. Such a moving way of lighting the cauldron is truly admirable.
Hou Bin graduated from the Harbin Institute of Physical Education in Heilongjiang in 1999. In the same year, he was transferred to the Rehabilitation Center of the Xiamen Disabled Persons' Federation, and in 2001, to the Xiamen Disabled Persons' Federation Blind Massage Guidance Center. In 2003, he enrolled in the undergraduate program in Journalism and Advertising at Xiamen University, truly a "man of both literary and martial prowess."
At the Sydney and Athens Paralympic Games, Hou Bin consecutively won two gold medals in the high jump. On January 24, 2008, he became the first International Paralympic Ambassador launched by the International Paralympic Committee. On February 10, 2015, he accepted an appointment letter issued by the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Bid Committee, officially becoming the image ambassador for Beijing’s bid for the Winter Olympics.
