At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, Hou Bin sat in his wheelchair, pulled the rope by himself, and climbed step by step to the base of the main cauldron, finally lighting the Paralympic flame. At that moment, the entire stadium erupted in cheers, and the atmosphere reached its climax. Such a moving way of lighting the cauldron is truly admirable.
Hou Bin graduated from the Harbin Institute of Physical Education in Heilongjiang in 1999, and was transferred to the Xiamen Disabled Persons' Federation Rehabilitation Center in the same year. In 2001, he moved to the Xiamen Disabled Persons' Federation Blind Massage Guidance Center, and in 2003, he enrolled in the undergraduate program in Journalism and Advertising at Xiamen University, truly a "man of both literary and martial prowess."
At the Sydney and Athens Paralympics, Hou Bin consecutively won two Paralympic high jump gold medals. On January 24, 2008, he became the first International Paralympic Ambassador launched by the International Paralympic Committee. On February 10, 2015, he received an appointment letter from the Beijing Winter Olympics Bid Committee, officially becoming the ambassador for Beijing’s bid to host the Winter Olympics.
