Everyone knows that exercising takes a lot of time and effort, especially when you're busy and can hardly find any spare time to work out.

But if you make the following silly mistakes after exercising, all your hard-earned efforts could go to waste. Even worse—you might get sick or injured.

Mistake #1: Still Wearing Clothes Soaked with Sweat

Why It’s Wrong:

Besides feeling gross, wearing sweaty clothes can lead to fungal infections and acne.

Also, while wearing wet clothes outside the gym won’t necessarily make you sick, if it’s cold, you’ll shiver in damp clothing. Over time, this can weaken your immune system.

The Right Approach:

Always remember to bring a few clean, dry backup clothes to the gym, including underwear, socks, and a fresh shirt. It’s best to take a shower after your workout. If you’re short on time, at least change into dry clothes.

Mistake #2: Rewarding Yourself with a Big Feast

Why It’s Wrong:

You burn about 250 calories during your workout, but if you eat a large meal afterward, you might end up consuming even more than you burned.

The Right Approach:

Choose healthy, low-calorie snacks after exercise to replenish carbohydrates and protein while satisfying your sweet tooth—like fruit, yogurt, or nuts.

Eating a healthy snack after your workout will leave you feeling more satisfied than indulging in a guilty dessert.

Mistake #3: Rolling Up Your Yoga Mat Until Next Use

Why It’s Wrong:

You wouldn’t fold up your damp sports bra and leave it like that until next time, right? So why do the same with your yoga mat? Remember, dark, moist areas are breeding grounds for bacteria.

The Right Approach:

When you get home after exercising, thoroughly wipe down your mat and hang it on a door or railing to dry.

Mistake #4: Drinking a Sports Drink

Why It’s Wrong:

A 350ml sports drink contains about 330 calories—about the same as a scoop of peanut butter ice cream. Unless you’ve exercised intensely for hours, you really don’t need a sports drink.

The Right Approach:

If you’re doing a regular 30–60 minute cardio session, plain water is enough to keep you hydrated. If you want electrolytes, try zero-calorie mineral water or low-calorie coconut water. Save the sports drinks for longer, more intense workouts.

Mistake #5: Touching Your Face with Your Hands

Why It’s Wrong:

If you exercise in public places such as gyms or yoga studios, you often touch public facilities like doorknobs or bathroom faucets, making it easy for germs to get on your hands.

If you touch your face with those hands after exercising, you may very well spend the next week lying on the couch sipping hot soup, surrounded by a pile of tissues — because you’ve caught a cold!

Correct approach:

Try not to touch your face. If possible, disinfect the equipment before using it, and use a towel you brought from home to wipe sweat. After your workout, go straight to the shower to wash off germs on your hands. If washing isn’t an option, use disinfectant wipes or hand sanitizer.

%Do not skip the warm-down exercises

Why it’s wrong:

The cooldown and stretching session after exercising is very important because it helps gradually bring your heart rate back to normal. At the same time, stretching your body can prevent muscle soreness and ligament injuries that often occur after workouts.

Correct approach:

If you’re worried that cooling down and stretching will cut into your effective workout time, then work harder during your actual exercise session — increase intensity during the first 10 minutes so you can afford 5 minutes of cooldown afterward.

Or, if possible, arrive at the gym 15–20 minutes early so you won’t have to shorten your effective workout time, and you’ll have enough time to relax your body and stretch your muscles.
