On July 14, 2017, guests from the Italian Embassy in China, the National Stadium, art and educational institutions, along with numerous fashion influencers, unveiled the Michelangelo International Art Exhibition at the Bird’s Nest. This exhibition features museum-grade replicas of Michelangelo’s classic works, including *David*, *Pietà*, and *The Genesis*, comprehensively showcasing the Renaissance master’s outstanding artistic achievements in drawing, sculpture, architecture, literature, and fresco.

Driven by the “Belt and Road” initiative as a new opportunity for cultural exchange and cooperation between China and foreign countries, the China National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), with the support of the Italian Casa Buonarroti Museum (Michelangelo’s former residence), commissioned internationally authorized fresco master Antonio de Vito to curate the exhibition. It also includes *The Twelve Prophets* meticulously copied by Ding Fang, Dean of the Renaissance Research Institute at Renmin University of China, using a brush on antique rice paper. The entire exhibition pays homage to and continues the legacy of the classics, while also reflecting the master’s growth, creative philosophy, and contemporary educational significance.

Fresco heritage bearer Antonio de Vito, who has been in Beijing for several days, has been busy at the exhibition setup site recently, personally guiding every aspect from planning the theme and arranging exhibits to setting the artistic tone, ensuring a top-tier display effect.

Among the over 100 exquisite pieces on display, journalists can see a bust of Michelangelo created by his close friend Ricciarelli, a Greek philosopher Heracleitus painted by his rival Raphael that symbolizes Michelangelo, the artist’s own self-portrait depicting human skin in *The Last Judgment*, as well as sculptures such as *Pietà*, *Rondanini Pietà*, and *Bacchus*. Particularly eye-catching is the 1:1 mold-replicated *David*, one of only three in the world, supervised by Italian cultural heritage authority Andrea Chiesi, which is especially majestic within the specially built domed exhibition hall at the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center. With the help of Crystal VR panoramic experience technology, visitors will also be transported to the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to view the frescoes *The Genesis* and *The Last Judgment*, traveling through time to experience the art scene of the Middle Ages 500 years ago.

The exhibition site simulates Michelangelo’s studio and the fresco creation workshop. Antonio de Vito plans to demonstrate the complete process of creating a fresco using medieval techniques over ten days. Visitors can not only watch up close but also try their hand at fresco-making and even have the chance to dine with curator Antonio de Vito. During the exhibition, the National Stadium also invited Dean Ding Fang to hold a series of lectures titled “Eastern Renaissance” at the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center, which visitors can book to attend or watch via live stream. Zhang Zikang, Director of the CAFA Art Museum, was also invited to discuss the future development of public aesthetics and art education.

The Bird’s Nest hopes to play a role in public aesthetic enlightenment and promoting public aesthetic education by introducing international-level art exhibitions. During the exhibition period, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center, together with Beijing Guang’ai School, curator Antonio, and celebrity Du Ruoxi, launched a children’s charity project, personally giving Michelangelo books to children. Antonio de Vito said in an interview, “Every child is born an artist; our responsibility is to guide them to discover beauty in life.” At the same time, the Bird’s Nest also announced that this Michelangelo International Art Exhibition will be free for children with disabilities: “We hope to plant a seed of art in children’s hearts, which may grow into a forest of artistic beauty in ten or twenty years.” Spanning the summer and National Day holidays of 2017, the Michelangelo exhibition has the potential to become a hot topic among professional audiences and art enthusiasts, yielding fruitful results in public aesthetic enlightenment and cultivation.

The Bird’s Nest has long been regarded as a dual landmark of modern Chinese architecture and the Olympic spirit, hosting a variety of cultural performances and witnessing sporting challenges that push the limits. Today, the Bird’s Nest is undergoing subtle changes. Leveraging the cluster advantage of comprehensive cultural and sports facilities and its international brand influence, the Bird’s Nest serves the capital’s urban strategic positioning of building a cultural center and an international exchange hub. It promotes the popularization of public art aesthetics and cross-disciplinary professional dialogue, gradually forming a cultural and art exhibition system consisting of permanent exhibitions and a series of special exhibitions.

During the Michelangelo International Art Exhibition, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center also launched several parallel exhibitions related to the Renaissance, offering limited-edition art reproductions and art book sales, making art part of daily life and turning everyday items into art, meeting the public’s spiritual needs for artistic beauty. At the same time, the two iconic brands, the Bird’s Nest and Michelangelo, engage in cross-industry dissemination through “cross-boundary collaboration.” Starting with Michelangelo, the Bird’s Nest also plans to introduce a series of international-level art exhibitions, supplemented by multiple sectors such as art derivatives, art brokerage, and model output.

Step into the Bird’s Nest

The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) is located in the southern part of the central area of the Beijing Olympic Park, on the east side of the northern end of Beijing’s central axis. It officially opened in 2008. The stadium’s form resembles a life-giving “nest” and cradle, embodying humanity’s hopes for the future. The Bird’s Nest has hosted numerous top-tier international events, including the 2008 Olympics and the 2015 IAAF World Championships, and is also the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics. It is a dual symbol of contemporary Chinese architecture and Olympic heritage.

In the exploration of post-Olympic sustainable development for the venue, on March 21, 2015, the National Stadium transformed 15,000 m² of space on the north side of the building2and established the “Bird’s Nest Cultural Center” for operation. The Bird’s Nest Cultural Center is positioned as a “public cultural space for the capital” and a “cultural, sports, and financial service platform.” Its core functions include art brokerage, original art exhibition planning, cultural and creative product development, art education, public activities, and international exchanges, with academic research and educational exchanges conducted both domestically and internationally centered around the art center.

Based at the Bird’s Nest, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center engages in cross-disciplinary international dialogue and dissemination, aiming to reflect China’s contemporary iconic architecture, the spirit of sports culture, and the exchange and display of Eastern and Western cultures. It gathers artistic works, displays, and institutional resources from both China and abroad, combining academic research with capital-driven initiatives to comprehensively develop art popularization and educational exchange functions. It also serves as an art incubator, becoming not only a hall of Olympic spirit but also an art sanctuary for the public to enjoy public cultural services.
