From December 31 to January 2, Moscow will hold its grand New Year festival for the second time. During this period, Tverskaya Street, the main thoroughfare in central Moscow, will offer visitors a special gift: the “privilege to stroll.” During these three festive days, vehicle access to Tverskaya Street will be restricted, transforming it into a beautiful pedestrian street filled with spectacular performances, lively music concerts, sports entertainment, circus acts, dance shows, fun masterclasses, and unique photo zones that will dazzle the senses. This year’s festival theme is “Childhood New Year,” meaning everyone who visits will be immersed in a magical, whimsical world full of childlike wonder—they’ll feel like they’ve returned to their childhood and can relive its simplicity and joy. All festival activities are free to join.Four uniquely styled squares themed around winter holidays of different eras will appear on Tverskaya Street. Near buildings 15, 16, and 17, visitors can step back in time to the New Year celebrations of the 1950s and 60s, while the festive vibe of the 1970s and 80s will spread around building 9. Then, the spirit of the 1990s and 2000s will take over the start of Tverskaya Street. The connected Mohovaya Street and Hunter’s Lane will be dedicated to vibrant and innovative modernity.

So, how exactly can you spend Russia’s most important holiday in Moscow?

First, don’t miss the free performances. The festival organizers have prepared 120 shows, all to be held on a specially built New Year stage at the festival venue.

For example, the CITY Symphony Orchestra and actors from the Moscow Musical Theater will together present dazzling opera performances such as "Cinderella," the operetta "Die Fledermaus," and musicals like Mamma Mia, while the Bolshoi Theatre and National Theatre will take you on an “opera journey” through the world of opera. Russian pop stars will also treat visitors to hit songs.

In addition, the prestigious Russian National Theatre “Golden Mask” award has curated about 300 stunning street theater performances for visitors. A variety of theatrical games and interactive shows will unfold right in the bustling streets, among the crowds.

The on-site sports shows and circus performances are sure to win your heart too. Acrobats and athletes will deliver eye-catching acts: high-wire walking, pole acrobatics, skate parks (which will be built directly on the street), stunts, and high-speed motorcycle performances inside cages—there’s so much to see and enjoy.

Dreamlike colorful light installations and more than 90 eye-catching artworks, including an exclusive Christmas tree, will create an indescribably beautiful world for visitors. 3D New Year cartoon character sculptures, a five-meter-diameter disco ball light, and fire fountains are just some of the festival art installations vying for attention—there’s bound to be one that suits your taste.

Of course, restaurant owners across the capital will also “capture” your appetite with special holiday dishes.

This is the second time Tverskaya Street is hosting the New Year carnival, with 2.7 million people joining the festivities last year.
