Keelung’s popular Lover’s Lake Scenic Area has seen frequent reports of large king cobras in recent years. With a sharp increase in hikers, chances of human-snake encounters have risen. Recently, a king cobra was spotted lurking near a trail, with some hikers even chased by the snake. The scenic area management has put up warning signs at key intersections, urging visitors to stay alert.
One hiker walking along one of the so-called “small loop” mountain trails in Keelung’s Lover’s Lake Scenic Area came face-to-face with a nearly two-meter-long king cobra resting beside the path. The snake immediately raised its head in defense upon seeing the approaching person. Fortunately, after a tense staredown and hissing sounds, the cobra slithered back into the bushes, ending the frightening encounter.
A kind-hearted woman who was hiking with her two rescued dogs shared that she visits the area daily to walk her pets. She noted that Lover’s Lake, thanks to its well-preserved ecosystem, has a particularly high snake population, and she herself has been chased by a king cobra. A weed cutter on-site mentioned that colleagues warn them about venomous snakes, but the loud noise from their machines tends to scare the snakes away—so they haven’t had any direct encounters yet. The management area explained that due to the well-conserved natural environment around Lover’s Lake, the area is rich in bird, snake, and other wildlife species. Hikers venturing near animal habitats may inevitably encounter them, and the public is advised not to act rashly or make loud noises that might disturb the local wildlife.
Perched high in the hills of Anle District, Keelung Lover’s Lake boasts beautiful surroundings and lush greenery. Since being taken over by the North Coast Guanyin Mountain Management Office in recent years, the area has been revitalized. With free admission, it attracts large numbers of tourists daily. The management has thoughtfully installed warning signs around the area, and fortunately, no accidents have occurred so far.
