China-Mongolia Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Erenhot

The branded scenic area created by Erenhot is named: China-Mongolia Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Erenhot. This cross-border tourism cooperation zone has been included in the National Tourism Administration’s 2015 list of Preferred National Tourism Projects. It consists of six components: the existing National Gate Scenic Area, Dinosaur Geological Park, and Yilin Caravanserai Museum, along with the planned China-Mongolia Cross-Border Economic Cooperation Zone, Border Residents’ Trade Market, and Erenhot City Lounge.

The total area of the tourism zone is 92.5 square kilometers, spatially divided into northern, eastern, and southern sections. The northern section covers 22 square kilometers, including the National Gate Scenic Area, China-Mongolia Cross-Border Economic Cooperation Zone, and Border Residents’ Trade Market. Located along the northern border, these areas are contiguous, abutting the China-Mongolia border to the north with 9 square kilometers extending across the border into Mongolian territory. To the south, it connects with the urban built-up area; to the west, it borders the western edge of the China-Mongolia Cross-Border Economic Cooperation Zone; and to the east, it reaches the eastern boundary of the National Gate Scenic Area. The eastern section spans 70 square kilometers, encompassing the Dinosaur Geological Park and Yilin Caravanserai Museum. This section extends east to the Erenhot city boundary, including the Yilin Caravanserai ruins, and is bordered by the Dinosaur Geological Park to the west, north, and south. The southern section is 0.5 square kilometers and consists of the Erenhot City Lounge.

The unique appeal and tangible platform of cross-border tourism are the core resources of the tourism zone. Cross-border tourism is a more attractive tourism feature than border tourism, allowing visitors from different countries to move freely, interact, and enjoy leisure within a transnational tourism space—an exceptional experience not currently available in China, making the resource highly distinctive. Erenhot is the most important area for China-Mongolia border economic and trade cooperation. The planned China-Mongolia Cross-Border Economic Cooperation Zone covers an area of 18 square kilometers, with 9 square kilometers allocated to each country. The zone will have closed management, enabling people to move freely across the national border line within the area, serving as a special platform for the core resources of the tourism zone.

In our ongoing efforts to develop the entire Erenhot urban area into an international tourism destination and a China-Mongolia cross-border cooperation tourism demonstration zone, we have achieved significant results.
