Suiyuan Province, a former provincial-level administrative region of China, was one of the original four provinces of northern China (Rehe Province, Chahar Province, Suiyuan Province, and Ningxia Province), abbreviated as Sui, with its capital at Guisui (now Hohhot City). It included the central and southern parts of today’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Suiyuan was known as Gui Sui Dao during the Qing Dynasty and was under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province. In 1914, the Beiyang Government under Yuan Shikai separated it from Shanxi and established the Suiyuan Special Region together with Xinghe Dao. In 1928, the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China renamed it Suiyuan Province, with its capital at Gui Sui (now Hohhot). During the Anti-Japanese War, the capital was moved to Shanba (now Hanggin Rear Banner, Bayannur City, Shanba Town). The population of Suiyuan Province was recorded as 2,166,513 in the first half of the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947) and 2,229,945 in the second half.During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, to strengthen defenses, a garrison city for the Eight Banners army was built 5 li northeast of Guihua City. This city was built over two years and was named "Suiyuan" by Emperor Qianlong, which means "pacifying the distant regions." A military governor was stationed in the city to oversee military affairs.Suiyuan City is commonly known as the "New City," while the corresponding Guihua City is the "Old City."In the Republican era, the Beiyang government merged the two cities of Guihua and Suiyuan into one, renaming it “Guisui,” which served as the seat of the military and political governor of the Suiyuan Special Region. In March 1954, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Hohhot was designated as the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Starting from April 25, 1954, "Gui Sui" was changed back to "Hohhot," restoring its original name.In the same year, the capital of Xinjiang, Dihua, was renamed Urumqi.Hohhot is located in North China, on the northern frontier, and within the interior of the Eurasian continent. It is the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This city has a long history, dating back as early as the Warring States period to King Wuling of Zhao.
