Cave Paradise – Tongtianyan, located at Shijiaotou Mountain, 3 kilometers southwest of downtown Yingde, is a large limestone karst cave. For over a thousand years, Cave Paradise has attracted visitors with its majestic and breathtaking landscapes, fantastical rock formations, and unique cultural charm. It is a rare and remarkable tourist destination in Yingde and even the entire Lingnan region.

The cave covers a total area of over 6,600 square meters. Visitors enter via steps from the cave entrance, moving from small to large chambers, which are divided into four main halls connected by a mysterious and surreal stone forest corridor. Each hall has its own distinctive features, with stalactites, stalagmites, and stone curtains in a dazzling array of shapes and forms, showcasing the wonders of nature. Inside the cave, layered cloud-like stone formations twist and curl like dragons and serpents; clear pools within these formations shimmer with reflections, creating an otherworldly mirage-like scene that seems bottomless and intangible. Especially in the last hall, the space is open and bright, with massive rocks standing opposite each other. The ceiling features two openings that let in sunlight, while trees above cast dappled shade. “Hanging vines sway, and clouds drift among the leaves.” Sunlight filters through the foliage, casting a mysterious veil over the hall. The cave also houses well-preserved Northern Song Dynasty stone carvings with smooth and clear inscriptions, making them a precious historical and cultural relic within Tongtianyan. After visiting, the renowned Southern Song Dynasty literary figure Hong Shu was captivated by the cave’s magnificent and mystical scenery as well as its extraordinary rock formations, and he wrote the widely celebrated essay “Record of Tongtianyan.”
