Kaiping Diaolou

1. Outdoor Activities:Photography, rural hiking
2. Geographic Information:Kaiping is bordered by Heshan to the north, Enping to the west, shielded by Xinhui to the southeast, and protected by Taishan to the southwest. After the Opium Wars, thousands of Kaiping residents traveled overseas to work in North America, making the region of Wuyi a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. These overseas Chinese earned money to buy land, build houses, marry, and start families. However, due to “changing times and rampant banditry,” “wealthy families built three- or four-story buildings with iron bars, stones, and cement (concrete) for self-defense; those with limited means pooled resources to build a shared building.” This led to the revival of European-style fortress-like buildings across the land of southern Guangdong. Between 1921 and 1926 alone, 608 diaolou (fortified towers) were built in Kaiping. Nearly every village in Kaiping has diaolou, which come in diverse shapes, blending Chinese and Western architectural elements. The more than 1,800 diaolou scattered along both sides of National Highway 325 create a symphony of East-meets-West countryside architecture. As you wander through Kaiping’s fields and paths, you can listen, look, and feel these scattered rural notes.
Kaiping Diaolou have long been a subject of interest for photography enthusiasts. The best time for photography is in golden October when the rice fields turn yellow and the weather is mostly clear—perfect for capturing stunning photos in the morning or afternoon.
3. Recommended Activity Routes:Focus on visiting Tangkou, Chikan, and Xian’gang towns. For hiking, consider routes like: Yinglong Tower – Canada Village – Liyuan Garden – Fang’s Watchtower – Zili Village Diaolou Cluster, or Yinglong Tower – Canada Village – Chikan Ancient Town – Majianglong Diaolou Cluster – Shiru Cottage – Yanping Tower – Jinjiangli Ruishi Tower.
★ Visiting the diaolou (watchtowers) in Kaiping should be a journey of discovery—many of these structures remain relatively unexplored. So rather than aiming to see specific diaolou, just stop and admire any you come across along the way.
4. Transportation:Multiple bus services run daily from various cities in Guangdong to Kaiping, with frequent departures passing by famous diaolou, traditional residences, and scenic spots.
5. Food and Accommodation:All county towns and small towns offer well-established food and lodging services, with prices similar to those found elsewhere in Guangdong; you can also stay in local farmhouses.
