The eerie and spooky Island of the Dolls — who’s up for a visit?

Mexico is located in North America and is one of the ancient centers of indigenous civilizations on the American continent, with its capital being Mexico City. Near Mexico City lies the Island of the Dolls, where thousands of worn-out dolls hang from trees and wooden huts.

The reason the island is filled with dolls is that an artist once came here and found the body of a little girl, next to which was a doll. To honor the girl, the artist hung the doll on a tree. Later, the artist felt as though the girl’s spirit had attached itself to the doll, so to appease her soul, he collected many more dolls and hung them on the trees.

Over time, more and more visitors to the island began hanging dolls on the trees as well. After decades of accumulation, broken and incomplete dolls can now be seen everywhere. Today happens to be the Hungry Ghost Festival, so let’s take you to experience the eerie and ghostly atmosphere of the Island of the Dolls.
