Xuanzhen --- After unifying the six states, Emperor Qin Shi Huang dispatched five armies southward and unified the Lingnan region in 214 BC, implementing the commandery-county system and establishing three commanderies: Guilin, Nanhai, and Xiang. During the Chu-Han contention at the end of the Qin Dynasty, Zhao Tuo, then the Commandant of Nanhai Commandery, conquered Guilin and Xiang commanderies, and established the Nanyue Kingdom in 203 BC, with its capital at Panyu, proclaiming himself the “Emperor Wu of Nanyue.” The territory of the Nanyue Kingdom basically covered the area of the three Qin commanderies in Lingnan, extending east to western Fujian, north to the Nanling Mountains, west to western Guangxi, and south to the South China Sea. The Nanyue Kingdom was the first feudal separatist regime in Lingnan. During its 93 years of rule over the region, it implemented the commandery-county system, integrated the various Baiyue peoples, promoted iron tools and agriculture, developed maritime trade, and facilitated the comprehensive social and historical development of Lingnan.
