Nanshan Cliff Stone Carvings in Yingde

The Nanshan Cliff Stone Carvings in Yingde are one of the three major stone carving sites in Guangdong. Nanshan features rugged terrain and beautiful scenery. The Beijiang River rushes swiftly beneath the rocky cliffs, with cliff inscriptions stretching over 150 meters along the riverbank, showcasing diverse calligraphy styles and rich content. There are more than 70 cliff inscriptions from the Tang to the Li Dynasty. The earliest inscriptions include the "Record of the South Rock Pavilion" written by Li Fan of Longxi in the sixth year of the Yuanhe era of the Tang Dynasty (811 AD) and the "Inscription on the Opening of the East Ridge Valley of Zhenyang Orchard" by Yuan Jie in the eleventh year of the Yuanhe era (816 AD). The most famous inscriptions are Su Shi’s "Nanshan" inscription from the first year of the Shaosheng era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1094 AD) and works by the renowned calligrapher and painter Mi Fu. There are also hot and cold springs by the river, which are popular tourist spots.
