Situated in the mountainous region of northern Guangdong, in the northern part of Qingxin County, Xinzhou Town is one of Guangdong’s gold-producing areas. Since 1982, it has been continuously mining gold ore and refining it into pure gold through in-depth processing. The site showcases the historical development from the most primitive mining methods—using hoes, hammers, and steel drills to extract surface ore—to modern mechanized and streamlined production and refining technologies. This also helps visitors understand the significant impact of technological advancement. Currently, there are three different gold refining methods still in use in Xinzhou Town (cyanidation leaching, gravity separation, and mechanical separation), offering a deeper understanding through comparative insights.

The gold production mining area of Xinzhou Town is located between Xinlian Village and Keng Village Committee, formed by an undulating mountain range covering an area of 5 square kilometers. The entire mining zone consists of new and old mining areas along with a refining production zone. There are 18 mining tunnels of various sizes (including manually operated small tunnels and modern large tunnels—such as those using wheelbarrows and rail tracks). Currently, 9 tunnels remain active, all employing modern mining techniques. The tunnels come in types such as flat tunnels and inclined tunnels, with lengths ranging from dozens of meters to several hundred or even thousands of meters. The tunnels crisscross in various directions, including two that reach vertical depths of -107 meters and -92 meters respectively. Inside the mined-out tunnels are numerous mining chambers of varying sizes, the smallest being just a few dozen cubic meters, while the largest can reach several hundred cubic meters.
