Taichung's Cozy Little Eatery: Rediscovering the "Mom's Taste" of Childhood

How long has it been since the kids working away from home last enjoyed a home-cooked meal made by mom? Located in North District, Taichung City, "Mingxianhang" is tucked away in an alley and doesn’t follow the current trend of Western-style brunches. The owner wants to showcase the charm of traditional Taiwanese flavors and instead serves homestyle dishes. Chicken shredded noodle salad, slow-braised minced pork rice, and pork rice are among the menu items. Main dishes plus fruit and soup are just NT$120–160. With low salt and less oil, the flavors are delightfully fresh, as though mom made the dish herself, giving those far from home a healthy meal option.

Though the first-floor space isn’t large, the high ceilings and transparent glass doors allow light to flood the entire area. The outdoor plants and greenery add a refreshing touch that invites people to pause. The shop’s decor is quite retro, creating a cozy, nostalgic feel like visiting grandma’s house. There are also many thoughtful touches, such as the uniquely creative pots hanging above the kitchen. In addition, following the principle of reusing second-hand items rather than wasting them, the owner has collected items from the 1960s and 1970s — everything from enamel pots and bowls to glassware and vintage handbags. Notably, these items are all sold at reasonable prices, with well-preserved second-hand handbags going for just NT$200–500 each. Retro enthusiasts will definitely want to take home a piece (or several).

The shop owner mentioned that "Mingxianhang" has a 40-year history and was originally the name of the owner’s father’s iron welding shop. The numerous "Tatung porcelain" pieces evoke memories of childhood dining tables for many born in the 1960s and 1970s. The owner explained that these were part of his mother’s dowry when she married his father. Even the red flower pattern on the business cards is inspired by the designs on the porcelain, carrying a strong sense of heritage.
