Taichung Fengyuan Affordable Sushi Shop – Flounder Nigiri with Fresh, Rich, and Silky Texture

Last updated 2026-09-25 — Since Panny loves sushi, whenever we find a sushi shop that seems decent, we’ll go give it a try. Not long ago after returning from Tokyo, we discovered the newly opened Kaki Sushi on Xinsheng North Road in Fengyuan District. I went there once with Wade. The first time, we only ordered donburi and a few individual nigiri pieces. Although my impression of the Taiwan-Japan fusion donburi was just so-so, I thought the nigiri performed quite skillfully. The environment was also simple and clean, so I brought Panny back for a second visit.

There have been some new restaurants opening up near Kaki Sushi recently, giving us more options for eating out. That’s nice—when we find something good, we’ll recommend it to everyone.

Kaki Sushi Menu

This shop offers a wide variety of sushi, N<饭为主打,品项还不少。

Chawanmushi (Steamed Egg Custard)
This one was for Panny. It had quite a lot of fillings and the seasoning was just right. However, the chawanmushi was a bit firm, lacking tenderness and brothiness—it could use some improvement.

Asparagus Hand Roll (left), Crab Meat Hand Roll (right)
The vegetables were fairly fresh and the taste was okay. The counter where the nigiri were placed looked very clean (circle highlighted).

Flower Sushi, Inari Sushi
The flower sushi was acceptable, but the inari sushi’s tofu skin was lacking in thickness and the flavor after soaking in the broth was a bit weak. The addition of yellow mustard and mayonnaise was also somewhat confusing.

Cucumber Thin Roll

The sushi we ordered
The plating at Kaki Sushi is quite commendable for an affordable sushi shop. From left to right in the photo: salmon roe gunkan, tuna, scallop, octopus, bamboo shoot and sea urchin gunkan, and fatty tuna gunkan. The last two are the fatty tuna gunkan and scallop gunkan.

I only had the scallop, bamboo shoot, and fatty tuna gunkan. They left a deep impression on me. I think the scallop and fatty tuna gunkan are really good value, with ample portion, smooth texture, and a clean finish. The ingredients used are also ones people generally love. The overall taste is very satisfying, and the umami is rich. The balance is excellent, making them the highlights of the meal.

The scallop had a decent portion, but the freshness was average; the bamboo shoot didn’t leave much of an impression. The other pieces, according to Panny, were just okay—not bad, but not particularly memorable. Perhaps the fish slices lacked some of the richness one might expect.

Grilled Tofu
This one is also recommended, as it’s crispy on the outside and silky inside, with delicious dipping sauce. Really tasty.

Grilled Salmon Rice Ball
This rice ball is a bit of a letdown. While the searing on the outside was fairly crisp, the level of char and aroma were lacking. There wasn’t much salmon inside, and the overall flavor was quite mild. The recipe could use some rethinking.

Fish Miso Soup
This time we ordered a bit more. For those looking for flavorful yet affordable dishes, this is a decent place—though some parts could still be adjusted.
