As winter arrives and the climate gradually cools, the earth slowly takes on winter’s colors. The tall bald cypresses lining both sides of the expanded Shilin Official Residence area gradually turn reddish-brown, and the winter sunlight intertwines with the sea of bald cypresses, creating a truly healing and beautiful scene.

Bald cypresses, originating from North America and also known as taxodium distichum, are among the few coniferous plants in Taiwan that turn yellow and shed leaves in autumn and winter. They have a tall, straight form, and their feathery leaves change color with the seasons—starting with light green buds in spring and summer that deepen in color, then gradually turning reddish-brown in autumn. By winter, the reddish-brown leaves flutter down like feathers, creating a stunning sight, hence earning the beautiful name “bald cypress.”

Bald cypresses thrive in wet and cold conditions, often planted in wetlands and near water. When the reddish-brown bald cypresses reflect on flowing water, the view is particularly beautiful. At Shilin Official Residence, the bald cypress group near Zhongshan North Road and the rows of bald cypresses planted near the park’s water-friendly area encircle the pond, and their reflections in the water create an even more picturesque scene—not only a visual delight but also a soothing experience for the soul.

Strolling leisurely along the plum blossom path is especially fitting for the season, captivating flower admirers who pause to linger and admire.

Plum blossoms are deciduous trees of the Rosaceae family, growing 4 to 10 meters tall. Most of the plum blossoms in the residence are white, with each delicate bloom sitting gracefully on the branches. Currently, about 30% of the plum blossoms have bloomed, and they are expected to be in full bloom during the New Year holiday. The elegance and romance of the plum blossoms are truly endearing.
