Bibeiyao Village is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Bibeiyao Village is located in the mountains 54 kilometers northeast of Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County. It is the birthplace of overseas Yao people. In Bibeiyao Village, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Bibeiyao Mountain, experience the Yao ethnic customs, and watch the Xiankeng Yao ethnic songs and dances. Surrounded by verdant peaks, Bibeiyao Mountain boasts picturesque landscapes. The most famous attraction is the Huanglongzhai Scenic Area, which features typical high-mountain canyon landforms. It includes attractions such as “Huanglong Cliff,” “Tiger’s Mouth Peak,” and “Fairy Asking the Golden Turtle.” The mountain peaks are lush and layered, offering breathtaking views. The Yao ethnic culture here is rich and vibrant. Both men’s and women’s clothing are embroidered with colorful patterns. The Yao people also retain unique marriage customs and celebrate many festive occasions, including interesting events such as “Lazy Day” and “Birds Sealing Mouths.”

Bibeiyao Village got its name because there is a small hill that resembles the back of a soft-shelled turtle. Originally called "Biebei" (Turtle Back), the character "bie" (turtle) was replaced with the homophone "bi" (must) due to its complexity, thus becoming "Bibeiyao."

Bibei is the birthplace of the Yao people who have settled in the United States, Thailand, France, Myanmar, Laos, and other countries.

Nestled among lush pine and fir forests, the Yao villages are scattered across the terraced fields on the mountainsides. The Yao homes are mostly built with fir bark and wood, while some are constructed with earthen bricks and blue tiles. The Yao villages are perched high on the mountainsides, appearing ancient and tranquil.

Along the rugged mountain paths, terraced fields are spread out everywhere. The most beautiful ones are found in the concentrated terraces of Guikengwei Village, known as the “Golden Terraces.” Covering an area of about 140 acres, they are distributed at altitudes between 300 and 500 meters. Standing atop the high mountains and looking down, the layered terraces resembling heavenly ladders, along with the houses in the fields, wisps of cooking smoke, and hardworking people, form a natural landscape painting of pastoral poetry.

Tip: There are tourist buses from Shaoguan to Bibeiyao Village. You can stay in the Yao village, which not only allows you to immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery but also lets you participate in various folk performances in the evening.

Transportation

There are public buses from Shaoguan North Passenger Transport Station to Lechang City. The first bus departs at 06:40, and the last bus at 18:00. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the last bus is at 18:30. Get off at Guitou Town. The fare is generally 8 RMB. From Guitou Town, take a minivan for about 7 RMB to reach the Ruyuan Bibeiyao Yao Village scenic area.
