Shikengkong Peak

Located more than 70 kilometers west of Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, at the border between Guangdong and Hunan provinces, it is also known as Mangshan Peak. With an elevation of 1,902 meters, it is the highest peak in Guangdong.

Below Shikengkong Peak lies the Babaoshan Wildlife Nature Reserve, which boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Precious tree species include Guangdong pine, southern Chinese hemlock, and zhenzhu huangyang (a type of boxwood). Precious animals include the South China tiger, the South China tufted deer, the golden cat, and many bird species. The summit consists of a single massive granite rock. The southeastern side features a near-vertical cliff of nearly 90 degrees, while the northwestern side is an almost 80-degree steep slope. Even if a thousand-pound bomb were dropped into a tunnel inside the mountain, the huge rock would not budge. It is said that it took over half a year to blast the current network of tunnels out of the granite summit. Visiting these tunnels has become an essential part of the adventure when climbing to the top. At an altitude of 1,500 meters, there is a beautiful alpine lake with calm, crystal-clear waters — a must-see attraction. Shaoguan and Ruyuan have bus services to Nanling National Forest Park, from which roads lead to various scenic spots.

Tip: The mountain temperature is relatively low and the weather is changeable, so remember to bring an extra layer of clothing and rain gear. The mountain paths can be slippery, so it’s best to wear waterproof, non-slip shoes. Photography enthusiasts should not miss the sea of clouds and sunrise on the mountain. The best season to view the sea of clouds at Shikengkong Peak is from October to February each year.
