Taiping Style Street

Taiping Style Street has a history of over 100 years. It is currently one of the most well-preserved commercial streets in the urban area in terms of traditional style and also one of the oldest streets in old Heyuan County. It connects to Zhongshan Road in the east and Hualong Road in the west, with several alleys linking both sides. The main street was initially about two and a half meters wide, while the alleys were roughly one meter wide. At that time, public security was relatively severe. To maintain safety, gate barriers were widespread. From Zhongshan Road to Hualong Road, there were no fewer than twenty gates of varying sizes. These gates were structurally made of wooden top and bottom beams, with the base beams crafted from granite. In case of bandit invasions, fir pillars could be placed against the beams, and crossbeams locked in place, forming temporary barriers of different sizes that isolated the area from the outside world, helping to ensure temporary safety within the street. The current length of Taiping Street is about 330 meters, with a width of 6 to 10 meters. The buildings along the street feature distinctive Hakka-style wooden arcade structures, with some elements of Western architectural influence. Many old shop signs are still faintly visible, giving the street high aesthetic value. Despite the passage of time, business on Taiping Street remains brisk, offering a wide range of goods including clothing, home appliances, and agricultural products. The bustling array of merchandise caters to the diverse needs of the public. It has become the only commercial pedestrian street in the urban area of Heyuan that retains the architectural style of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, exuding a nostalgic atmosphere and integrating shopping, tourism, and sightseeing.
