Heyuan Dinosaur Museum

The Heyuan Dinosaur Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a science education base, and a patriotic education base.

The Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, under the administration of the Heyuan City Museum, is a patriotic education base in Heyuan, a science education base in Guangdong Province, a youth science and technology education base in Guangdong Province, and a national science education base. In April 2013, it collaborated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to jointly establish the “China Paleozoological Museum Dinosaur Egg Hall.”

The museum is situated within Gui Peak Park on Binjiang Avenue in downtown Heyuan, adjacent to the Heyuan City Museum, with Gui Peak Mountain to the north. On the mountain stands the nationally protected key cultural relic—the Guifeng Pagoda from the Song Dynasty—and the ancient Guifeng Temple from the Ming Dynasty. At the foot of the mountain, there is a massive 48-meter-high, 338-meter-long, and 800-meter-spanning dreamlike dinosaur sculpture wall, as well as a 9-meter-tall main dinosaur sculpture and 10 groups of creative steel dinosaur sculptures.

The museum officially opened to the public on November 26, 2010. It has a construction area of 8,300 square meters and an exhibition area of 3,100 square meters. Themed around dinosaurs, it mainly displays over 17,000 various dinosaur egg fossils— certified by the Guinness World Records—as well as more than 10 sets of dinosaur skeletal fossils and numerous dinosaur footprint fossil models, showcasing Heyuan’s rich dinosaur fossil resources as the “Hometown of Chinese Dinosaurs.”

The exterior design of the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum is novel and unique, resembling an awakening seed. The exhibitions inside utilize high-tech displays such as sound, light, and electricity, along with large-scale oil paintings and sculptures, complemented by text and images, fully presenting the richness of Heyuan’s natural and historical cultural heritage.

On the morning of April 17, 2013, the unveiling ceremony for the “China Paleozoological Museum Dinosaur Egg Hall” was held at the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, marking its upgrade to a national-level museum. It is reported that this is the first national-level museum directly authorized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in a prefecture-level city in Guangdong.

The basement level of the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum features scenes of dinosaur fossil excavation and restoration as well as temporary exhibition halls. The first-floor exhibition, themed around dinosaurs, is divided into three exhibition halls—“Dinosaur Nursery,” “Dinosaur Footprints,” and “Hometown of Dinosaurs”—along with a 3D media theater, displaying over 15,000 various dinosaur egg fossils certified by the Guinness World Records, the holotype specimen of Huang's Heyuan Dragon, and dinosaur footprint fossils discovered in Heyuan. These reflect the city’s unique “trinity” of dinosaur fossil resources. The lobby of the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum showcases the stunning “Nine Dragons Combination”: a large sauropod dinosaur skeleton measuring 20 meters in length and 8 meters in height, three pterosaurs, and animated models of a T-Rex and an oviraptor, giving visitors the impression of stepping into a Jurassic Park millions of years ago. The second floor of the museum focuses on the ancient Hakka county theme and is divided into four exhibition halls: “The Light of Dong Civilization,” “The Birthplace of Lingnan Civilization,” “Treasures of the Ancient County Through the Ages,” and “The Charm of Hakka Culture in the Ancient County.” These display precious cultural relics from various dynasties unearthed or collected in Heyuan, major archaeological discoveries, national and provincial intangible cultural heritage, and human history. Among them is a national first-class relic—a Ming Dynasty tri-colored pottery jar unearthed in Heyuan—as well as Hakka embroidery, furniture, and farming tools.

Shangcheng Subdistrict: The Shangcheng Subdistrict Office was established in March 1997 when Yuan Town was divided to form subdistrict offices. Located in the old urban area, it borders the Dong River to the east, Yuannan Town to the south, Xinjiang Subdistrict Office to the west, and Xinfeng River to the north. The office is located at No. 74 Huancheng East Road and currently serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Yuancheng District. It covers a total area of 3.5 square kilometers, with a registered population of 39,292, 7,590 households, and oversees six community neighborhood committees: Shangcheng, Xiacheng, Xiajiao, Gongyuan, Xinxing, and Nanhu.
