Shangcheng Qiuwu Ancestral Hall is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the Urban Underground Work Team’s clever acquisition of the Nationalist 196th Division’s city defense map is located at No. 116 Beizhi Street, Shangcheng, Yuancheng District, Heyuan City (Shangcheng Qiuwu).

In August 1949, leaders of the Guangdong-Guangxi-Hunan Border Column, in preparation for the liberation of Heyuan City, ordered the urban underground work team to obtain the “Heyuan City Defense Map” by all means possible. The staff office of the Nationalist 196th Division, stationed in Heyuan City, was located in the historic Qing Dynasty building known as Shangcheng Qiuwu. The underground work team assigned the task to Ma Qizhi, who was only 17 years old. After careful preparation and several days of reconnaissance, Ma Qizhi, taking advantage of his young age, small stature, and familiarity with insiders, managed to deceive the guards and enter the staff office. He stole the city defense map hanging on the side hall wall and, with the cooperation of the underground work team, quickly delivered it to the intelligence department of the “Border Column.” Commander Lin Ping of the “Border Column” highly commended the achievements of the urban work team, and Ma Qizhi was awarded commendation by the headquarters of the Guangdong-Guangxi-Hunan Border Column. Based on the information marked on the city defense map, our “Border Column” forces stationed in Heyuan accurately targeted enemy fortifications and camps with artillery fire, forcing the remnants of the 196th Division to abandon the city and flee southward.

Located in the old city area, it borders the Dongjiang River to the east, Yuannan Town to the south, Xinjiang Subdistrict Office to the west, and Xinfengjiang River to the north.
