Former Residence of Peng Pai

The former residence of Peng Pai is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of martyr Peng Pai is located on Qiaonan Street in Haicheng, facing south with its back to the north and overlooking Longjin Creek. Originally built in the late Qing Dynasty, the main building is a two-story structure, 12.9 meters wide with three bays and 10.9 meters deep. The front porch features Western-style architecture, the floor is paved with floral tiles, and the gable walls are of the fire-prevention mountain wall style. The total construction area is 266 square meters. Comrade Peng Pai was born here on October 22, 1896, and spent his childhood and youth in this house. In the summer of 1922, Comrade Peng Pai began promoting the peasant movement and moved to live in the "Dequ Study Room" together with his wife, Cai Suping.

In March 1925, after the First Eastern Expedition of the National Revolutionary Army of Guangdong arrived in Haifeng, Comrade Zhou Enlai, Director of the Political Department of the Whampoa Military Academy, Chiang Kai-shek, President of the Academy, Soviet military advisor Borodin, and General Galen of the revolutionary army stayed here and discussed work together. In June 1925, when the revolutionary army returned to Guangzhou, enemy forces recaptured Haifeng City, and the residence was burned down, leaving only the foundation walls. After liberation, the People’s Government allocated funds to build a perimeter wall for its protection. On July 7, 1962, the Guangdong Provincial People’s Committee designated the site as a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit (including the Dequ Study Room). In 1986, the National Cultural Relics Bureau allocated 150,000 yuan to rebuild the residence according to its original appearance and exhibited relics related to the life of martyr Peng Pai. It has since become an important place for visitors to learn, honor the great achievements of revolutionary martyrs, and receive patriotic and revolutionary tradition education.

As Peng Pai devoted himself to the revolutionary movement, the family wealth and property, including the former residence, contributed to the revolution. According to the *Haifeng Cultural Relics Annals*, in March 1925, after the First Eastern Expedition of the National Revolutionary Army of Guangdong arrived in Haifeng, Comrade Zhou Enlai and the Soviet military advisor Borodin and General Galen of the revolutionary army stayed here and discussed work together.

The *Haifeng Cultural Relics Annals* also record that in June 1925, after the revolutionary army returned to Guangzhou, remnants of the warlord Chen Jiongming’s forces recaptured Haifeng City, and the residence was burned down, leaving only the foundation walls. After liberation, the People’s Government allocated funds to build a perimeter wall for its protection. On July 7, 1962, the Guangdong Provincial People’s Committee designated the site as a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit (including the Dequ Study Room). In 1986, the National Cultural Relics Bureau allocated 150,000 yuan to rebuild the residence according to its original appearance and set up an exhibition of relics from the life of martyr Peng Pai.

Now, the former residence of Peng Pai has reopened with a renewed look, attracting a continuous stream of both domestic and international visitors who have also composed many beautiful poems here.

Peng Pai (1896–1929)

Born into a wealthy landlord family in Haicheng Town, Haifeng County. He graduated from Waseda University in Japan in May 1921. After returning to China, he joined the Communist Youth League of China in Guangzhou and later became a member of the Chinese Communist Party.
