Hometown Garden (Liao Chengzhi’s Tomb)

Hometown Garden (Liao Chengzhi’s Tomb) is located within the Red Flower Lake Scenic Area in Huizhou. On September 25, 2008, the ashes of Mr. Liao Chengzhi were relocated here from Babaoshan in Beijing. The garden is divided into areas such as the “Entrance Area,” “Memorial Plaza Area,” and “Elegy Stone Tablet Area.” The “Memorial Plaza Area” includes a half-length bronze statue of Liao Chengzhi and a paved plaza, while the “Elegy Stone Tablet Area” features a memorial platform and elegy stone tablets. The bronze statue at the entrance of the tomb garden was inscribed by Jiang Zemin, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China.

Hometown Garden is the final resting place of Liao Chengzhi, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a proletarian revolutionary, an eminent social activist, and an exemplary leader of the Party and the nation. The establishment of Hometown Garden is to honor his spirit of patriotism.

In the Elegy Stone Tablet Area, two black granite stone tablets, each over two meters tall and more than one meter wide, are engraved with two elegiac poems by Zhao Puchu, former Chairman of the Buddhist Association of China. One is “Elegy for Vice Chairman Liao Chengzhi,” written on June 11, 1982; the other is “In Memory of Comrade Chengzhi,” written on June 17 of the same year.

Construction of Hometown Garden began in December 2007 and was completed on April 30, 2008. On September 27 of the same year, Huizhou held a commemorative ceremony for the 100th anniversary of Liao Chengzhi’s birth. His ashes were moved from the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing to Hometown Garden at Red Flower Lake in Huizhou for interment.

At the entrance lies a horizontally placed, over-one-meter-long black granite stone slab inscribed with the three large characters “Hometown Garden” in the handwriting of Liao Hui, son of Liao Chengzhi.
