Monument to the Martyrs Fallen in the Eastern Expedition

The Monument to the Martyrs Fallen in the Eastern Expedition is a cultural relic protection unit of Huizhou City, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The Monument to the Martyrs Fallen in the Eastern Expedition is located at Wuyan Bridge on the left side of the West Gate Ferry Terminal in Qiaonorth, Huicheng District, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. It was built to commemorate the 241 officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Eastern Expedition Army’s battle to capture Huizhou City. The monument stands approximately 5 meters tall and consists of a base and a main body, surrounded by shell models serving as railings, connected by iron chains. The main body is made of granite, rectangular and elongated, with the front engraved in intaglio with the bold regular script “Monument to the Martyrs Fallen in the Eastern Expedition of Huangpu Military Academy,” inscribed by Lin Zhenxiong. The base is inlaid with four stone tablets—two marble slabs at the front and back. The front slab bears the inscription “Spirit Immortal,” handwritten by Chiang Kai-shek, then president of Huangpu Military Academy, while the back slab features the inscription “Mighty as the West Lake,” inscribed by Lin Zhenxiong, then educational director of the academy. The left and right slate slabs are both made of black stone and bear the names of the martyrs who fell in this campaign, including Lieutenant General Liu Yaocheng. The original monument was destroyed in the early years after liberation. In October 1992, the People’s Government of Huizhou City rebuilt the monument east of Wuyan Bridge following the original design, in honor of the martyrs’ spirit.

In June 1984, the Monument to the Martyrs Fallen in the Eastern Expedition was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Huizhou City.
