Dongjiang People's Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument
The Dongjiang People's Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is a Huizhou City cultural heritage site, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.
The Dongjiang People's Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is one of Huizhou City’s protected cultural heritage sites, located in Fengshan Park, Huizhou, Guangdong Province. Constructed in December 1984, some say it was built to honor revolutionary martyrs who died in the Dongjiang area, while others believe it commemorates members of the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Force who perished in battle. It was listed as a Huizhou City cultural heritage site in July 1990. Covering an area of 15,000 square meters, the monument stands 16.7 meters tall, with a body width of 1.8 meters and a base width of 6.4 meters. In front of the monument are six figurative sculptures, and behind it lies a relief wall.
The Dongjiang People's Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument spans 15,000 square meters, stands 16.7 meters tall, has a body width of 1.8 meters, and a base width of 6.4 meters. The front of the monument bears an inscription written by Nie Rongzhen, Marshal of the People’s Republic of China, while the other three sides feature designs of red cotton, pine trees, and cypresses. The base holds a bronze plaque inscribed with text recounting the contributions of the people of the Dongjiang region to the revolution from the Opium Wars to the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
In front of the monument lies a memorial square, flanked by six granite figurative sculptures created in 1986. These depict participants in the Opium Suppression at Humen, members of the Tongmenghui, soldiers of the Dongjiang Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army, fighters of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army, female soldiers of the Anti-Japanese War, and Liberation Army troops. At the front of the square stands a memorial archway carved from granite, with a plaque inscribed with the words “Might of the Dongjiang.” Behind the monument is a semi-circular relief wall named the “Dongjiang Revolutionary Achievements Relief Wall,” which features six embedded bronze relief panels. Each panel is 2.3 meters high and 3.7 meters wide, depicting scenes titled “Opium Suppression at Humen,” “Oath to Overthrow the Qing Court,” “Victory in the Eastern Expedition,” “Defending the Soviet Area,” “Flames of the Anti-Japanese War,” and “Triumph of Liberation.”
The sculptures in front of the monument and the relief wall behind it were jointly created by Zhang Songhe, Pan He, Li Hanyi, Liang Mingcheng, and Chen Shuguang.
