Plum Blossom Pavilion, Former Site of the General Headquarters of the Dongjiang Overseas Chinese Service Corps

The former site of the general headquarters of the Dongjiang Overseas Chinese Service Corps is located within the Plum Blossom Pavilion at No. 7, Lane 3, Jindai Street, Qiaoxi Subdistrict, Huicheng District. After the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, the anti-Japanese salvation movement in the Dongjiang region reached its peak. In August, service groups organized by compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas Chinese began returning to the Dongjiang area to participate in the anti-Japanese salvation efforts. In October 1938, Japanese forces landed from Daya Bay and invaded South China, triggering an unprecedented surge in the Dongjiang anti-Japanese salvation movement. In mid-December, under the leadership of the Southeastern Special Committee of the Communist Party of China, representatives from the Nanyang Huiqiao Jiuxianghui (Overseas Chinese Salvation Association of Nanyang), the Hong Kong Huiyang Youth Association, the Yuxian Le She (Leisure and Joy Society), and the Haifeng-Lufeng Native Place Association held a meeting and decided to establish the Dongjiang Overseas Chinese Service Corps. The goal was to mobilize and organize patriotic youths to return home and join the anti-Japanese salvation movement.

In January 1939, the Dongjiang Overseas Chinese Service Corps was officially established in Danshui, Huiyang. It subsequently formed seven sub-groups (later converted into teams) in Huiyang, Haifeng-Lufeng, Boluo, Zijin, Heyuan, Longchuan, and Heping, as well as eight teams in Dongguan, Bao’an, Zengcheng, Longmen, Liangcai, Wensen, and Kuala Lumpur, along with one mobile Dongjiang opera troupe. The total number of members grew to over 500. In April, the general headquarters of the Dongjiang Overseas Chinese Service Corps relocated from Danshui to Huizhou. With strong support from Zhang Youren, a local patriotic and democratic figure in Huizhou, the Zhang family’s Plum Blossom Pavilion on Jindai Street was used as the office location for the corps headquarters.

In 2004, the Plum Blossom Pavilion was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Huizhou Municipal Government, and in 2015, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.

Qiaoxi Subdistrict is located by the picturesque West Lake and the Dongjiang River. It was the site of the ancient Xunzhou and Huizhou prefectural cities.
