Huizhou Convention and Exhibition Center

The Huizhou Convention and Exhibition Center is a large-scale public complex integrating various functions such as exhibitions, conferences, business, dining, and entertainment. It was invested in and built by Hong Kong’s Zhongzhou Group. Located in the Jiangbei area of downtown Huizhou, it is one of the projects under Huizhou’s “Three Museums and One Center.”

The Huizhou Convention and Exhibition Center has a single-story multi-curved surface lattice shell structure, and can host 1,138 standard booths. With a total construction area of approximately 24,000 square meters and a total weight of over 3,960 tons—including 600 tons of cast steel—the structure uses nodes where multiple rods intersect in various directions, connected through cross-plate full-penetration welding and cast steel joints. There are a total of 13,216 welds, all required to be Grade 1 quality. Work had to be carried out at an average elevation of 30 meters, making the hoisting process particularly challenging.

The architectural design of the Huizhou Convention and Exhibition Center is inspired by the concept “Cloud Sea Over Waves.” At the time, the design team provided three options for public selection. The first proposal, titled “Cloud Sea Over Waves,” features a lightweight, flowing, and dynamic roof with undulating waves that resemble clouds floating above the Dong River. Its grand, modern, and rhythmic form reflects the innovative spirit of Huizhou—a city rich in historical and cultural heritage—as it strides forward in the new era. The elegant eaves, resembling wings, suggest the city’s continually ascending economic momentum.

Additionally, two other design proposals were available for consideration: “Tide of the Dong River” and “Dewdrops Gleam at Dawn.” The functionalities of all three designs are largely similar, differing mainly in their architectural forms. The first proposal offers a vivid, simple, and practical roof design; the second is more stately but comes with a higher cost; while the third, featuring an egg-shaped structure commonly used both domestically and internationally, involves a more complex structure and a higher price tag.

The Huizhou Convention and Exhibition Center will help enhance Huizhou’s overall competitiveness and shape a new urban image for the city. It will play an important role in promoting external exchanges and cooperation, as well as driving economic and social development.
