Gutian Nature Reserve

The reserve is located in the northwest of Huidong County, Guangdong Province. The terrain of the reserve consists of low mountain plateaus. In the eastern part, three peaks—Niujiao Mountain, Yanghushen, and Wuji Peak—all have elevations exceeding 1,000 meters, while Nanshui Xin Bridge has an elevation of only 113 meters, with slopes ranging between 25 to 55 degrees. The annual average temperature on Pingshan is 21.7°C, the January average is 13.5°C, and the July average is 28.3°C. The extreme low temperature is 0.2°C, and the extreme high is 38.3°C. The climate indicators for Gutian are estimated to be slightly lower, with short periods of frost occurring in some years. The annual average precipitation is 1,805 mm, with the maximum annual precipitation reaching 2,530 mm. Precipitation from April to July accounts for 81.6% of the annual total, and the average relative humidity is 77%. Tropical flora elements are distributed in the valleys and slopes at higher altitudes, such as the tropical fruit tree "Boluo Man" which can grow normally here. The zonal vegetation is monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest, found on slopes between 400–800 meters in elevation, with main tree species including those from the Lauraceae, Fagaceae, Theaceae, Myrtaceae, and Fabaceae families—such as Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Erythrophleum fordii, and Tsoongiodendron odorum. Other vegetation types include Masson pine needle forests and grasslands. The flora region is classified as 1E14. Nationally protected plants include first-class Cycas revoluta, and second-class Ixonanthes chinensis and Erythrophleum fordii, as well as third-class Aquilaria sinensis (also known as agarwood), Amentotaxus argotaenia, and Morinda officinalis. The area is rich in economic plants, with over 300 species of medicinal plants. Nationally protected animals of the second class include sambar deer, serows, pangolins, and gibbons. This area marks the southern boundary of the distribution range for sambar deer and serows.
