Seven Star Wells

Within Pinghai Ancient Town, there are seven ancient wells known as the Seven Star Wells. These seven historic wells were planned and built at the same time as the town’s central cross street. They are located with two wells on East Street, three on West Street, one on South Street, and one on North Street. Legend has it that the Seven Star Wells were named after the sun, moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn. The wells are approximately 8 meters deep and are all built with uniform stone blocks, making them very sturdy. The wells are all circular in shape, while the well platforms are either square or round. The water quality of the Seven Star Wells varies with the weather — it is fresher during the rainy season and saltier during dry winters. Even today, many people still come to draw water from these ancient wells.
