Baipenhu Ecological Scenic Area is a national water conservancy scenic area.

Baipenzhu Reservoir is located in Baipenzhu Town, about 32 kilometers northeast of Huidong County. The reservoir covers a water area of 40 square kilometers, featuring picturesque and elegant scenery, and is the fourth largest reservoir in Guangdong Province.

The Baipenzhu Reservoir area, located upstream of the Xizhi River — a tributary of the Dong River in eastern Huidong — is composed of two ecosystems: a forest ecosystem (Lianhua Mountain) and a wetland ecosystem (Baipenzhu Reservoir). It bears some resemblance to Wanlv Lake, but unlike the latter, which is heavily developed and teeming with tourists, this area has retained its pristine, untouched beauty due to government restrictions on development.

On both sides of the reservoir, lush greenery stretches as far as the eye can see, with continuous mountain ranges. There are many small islands in the lake where visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, stream tracing, and soaking in natural pools. After an exciting day, you can also soak in the nearby natural sulfate hot springs to relax, then head to Baipenzhu Market to sample a variety of mountain and river delicacies.

Main Attractions

The scenic area boasts a harmonious blend of natural and cultural landscapes. The dam, power station buildings, isolated islands, waterfalls, temples, green mountains, and clear waters together form a stunning landscape painting.

Within the scenic area stands an ancient temple built over 900 years ago during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty. It is dedicated to the Buddhist deity Ksitigarbha. The temple is set in a serene environment and remains bustling with incense and worshippers year-round, attracting many visitors and devotees.

There is also a natural sulfate hot spring here, with crystal-clear, azure-blue water and a maximum temperature exceeding 70 degrees Celsius. The spring contains various minerals including sulfur.

Baipenzhu Town: Located at 115°02' east longitude and 27°04' north latitude, Baipenzhu Town is home to the Baipenzhu Reservoir, a large-scale (Class I) water control hub project in Guangdong Province. The town covers an area of 74 square kilometers and includes six village committees — Hengjiang, Baima, Gonghe, Shuangjin, Xinhe, and Muhua — and one neighborhood committee, governing a total of 36 villager groups. It is 35 kilometers from Huidong County’s seat (Pingshan Town) and 75 kilometers from Huizhou City.
