Double Moon Bay Scenic Area

Double Moon Bay is located in Gangkou Town, Huidong County. When viewed from the air, the entire bay resembles two crescent moons facing away from each other, hence the name "Double Moon Bay." The unique feature of Double Moon Bay is that the left bay is as calm as a mirror, while the right bay has roaring waves — one tranquil, the other dynamic. Compared to the nearby Xunliao Bay, it is a destination that hasn't been overly developed.

Here, different people can enjoy different activities — a big group of friends can come for beach barbecues, go boating, or try water sports, families can take a seaside stroll or watch the sunset together, or you can stay in a luxurious sea-view room and dine on a sumptuous seafood feast at the upscale Sea Bana Restaurant. In short, seafood and sea views are the biggest highlights of Double Moon Bay.

Double Moon Bay is situated by the port, so the seafood here is not only fresh but also affordable. In the morning, many fishermen at the bridgehead try to attract tourists to take boat trips for sightseeing or fishing. Fishing boats come in three categories: small boats for two-hour trips cost 100 RMB, with basic nets that usually catch little; medium boats equipped with slightly better trawls charge around 250 RMB for two hours (can be negotiated down to about 200), accommodating roughly a dozen people; large boats are about 600 RMB for two hours and use even bigger nets. All the seafood caught belongs to the tourists, which can then be taken to restaurants for cooking, with charges based on the type of dish and amount of seafood.

Another must-visit spot is the Double Moon Bay Observation Deck. It takes about an hour to hike from Gangkou Town or you can take a motorbike taxi (around 50 RMB round trip) up to Daxing Mountain, where you can overlook the entire bay. The view from the top is breathtaking — the small town, fishing boats, and distant islands are all clearly visible, making one marvel at how beautiful a coastal town in China can be. Note that to get the full panorama of Double Moon Bay, choose a clear day. The sunset here is particularly spectacular, as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sea and sky in hues of orange.

The Gangkou Bridge is the most important transportation route in Double Moon Bay. The night view here is amazing. Nearby, Anjie Street is the busiest commercial area, offering a variety of local snacks. Hidden within it is a seafood market where you can buy fish caught earlier that very morning. It's recommended to pick up some fresh seafood here before leaving.

At the southernmost part of Double Moon Bay lies a sea turtle nature reserve, the only sea turtle conservation base in Asia. Located halfway up the mountain, it offers views of the turbulent waves below. Heading north, you can explore the Pinghai Ancient City, salt fields, and Donglian Zen Temple, where you can experience the authentic fishing village lifestyle.

Special Tips

The road to the Double Moon Bay Observation Deck is quite rugged and gets narrower the higher you go. Cars often get stuck on the way up, so driving there is not recommended. Also, there is no entrance fee for the observation deck, nor are there any guardrails. Be cautious when it's crowded.
