Huidong Baima Kiln Site

The Huidong Baima Kiln Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

The Baima Kiln Site is located in Tianxin Village Group, Baima Village, Baipenzhu Town, Huidong County. It lies on the southern side of Baipenzhu Reservoir, west of Baima Mountain, which belongs to the eastern branch of the Lotus Mountain Range. The site is mainly distributed across small hills along both banks of the Baima River. The kilns at the Baima Kiln Site are mostly of the "mushroom-shaped kiln" (mantou kiln) structure. This site is an important physical relic for researching the ceramic history of Guangdong and the export history of eastern Guangdong ceramics during the Ming Dynasty. Currently, a large number of kiln bricks, kiln waste, saggar fragments, various types of ceramic shards, and a small amount of kiln wall remains can be found around the Baima Mountain area.

The Baima Kiln primarily produced daily-use ceramics on a large scale with relatively high output, which were exported to various countries in Southeast Asia. According to local accounts, in the past when water transport was the main mode of conveyance, even heavy items such as porcelain were transported via rivers. The Baima Kiln Site is situated at the western foot of Baima Mountain, east branch of the Lotus Mountain Range in Baipenzhu Town. The Baima River and other waterways crisscross the mountain’s base, featuring significant elevation differences, and the Baima River directly flows into the Xijiang River. This provided great convenience for the maritime transport of Baima Kiln products. Therefore, locals speculate that the porcelain produced at the Baima Kiln may have been shipped via the Xijiang River to the Dongjiang River, then transported to Guangzhou, and subsequently exported through coastal ports to destinations such as Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asian countries.

On December 10, 2015, the Huidong Baima Kiln Site was designated as part of the eighth batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units.
