Jieshou Yimou Memorial Archway

The Jieshou Yimou Memorial Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The “Jieshou Yimou” Imperial Edict Memorial Archway is located in Huangsiyang Ancient Walled Village, Duozhu Town, Huidong County. It was first built during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the memorial archways nationwide that were commissioned by imperial decree.

The entire archway is majestic in presence, with a beautifully spectacular structure and ingeniously exquisite construction techniques. The archway features four pillars and three gateways, divided into three levels, standing approximately ten meters tall, with the central gateway being four meters wide. The upper front and back panels of the main gate are inscribed vertically in intaglio regular script with the characters “Imperial Edict” and “Imperial Favor” respectively. The central panels on both sides are inlaid with the imperial calligraphy “Jieshou Yimou,” said to have been personally inscribed by the emperor at the time. The characters are dignified and elegant, with bold and powerful strokes. The four pillars of the archway are square-shaped, adorned with exquisitely carved reliefs such as bats, the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, twin dragons spitting pearls, civil and military officials, and nine dragons in the sea. The middle level contains hundreds of stone-carved characters, each about five square centimeters in size. The lower level features two pairs of stone lions and one pair of stone drums at the front and back. The stone lions are imposing in form, with pearls in their mouths and expressions full of joy.

In 2012, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province listed the “Jieshou Yimou” Imperial Edict Memorial Archway as a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.
