Luogangwei

Luogangwei is a cultural heritage site protected by Huizhou City.

Luogangwei is located in Nanmen Village, Fanhe Village Committee, Rennai Town, Huidong County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, and was built during the Qing Dynasty.

The enclosure faces southwest and is rectangular in shape, measuring a total depth of 90.15 meters from the south gate to the north gate, and a total width of 90.65 meters from the east gate to the west gate. - It is enclosed by 108 individual buildings arranged in four rows to form a “square,” with the first level of each middle row featuring doorways corresponding to the four directions, namely the east, south, west, and north enclosure gates. The second level above the gates serves as elevated watchtowers with shrines placed on them. The inner buildings consist of six symmetrical vertical rows of houses centered along the north-south axis, all facing southwest. Each vertical row contains eight units—three upper rooms and two lower corridors (a crawling-lion style layout)—that connect front to back.

All structures are built with brick and wood, featuring tiled roofs with flush gables. A 3.3-meter-wide cobblestone lane connects the east-west and north-south gates, while other sections are divided by cobblestone lanes ranging from 1.5 to 2.6 meters in width. Outside the south gate lies a semi-circular barbican known as the “luo’er,” inside of which sits a stone dog in a seated position measuring 0.55 meters in height, 0.35 meters in length, and 0.3 meters in width, positioned to the left of the inner south gate. The outer gate lintel of the barbican is inscribed with the three characters “Luogangwei.” The north gate, which corresponds to the south gate, is sealed and not passable.

The architectural layout, style, and craftsmanship of Fanhe Luogangwei are unique locally, making it highly valuable for studying the region’s cultural history and building techniques.

Fanhe Village: Located in the southeastern part of Daya Bay, Fanhe Village sits against mountains and faces the sea, boasting a coastline of 2.5 kilometers. Guang-Shan Highway runs through the village, giving it a prime geographical location. The village has a population of 10,965 residents, with about 895 non-local residents. There are 11 villager groups, 3,200 mu of arable land, 22,000 mu of mountainous land, and 2,500 mu of beach area. Fanhe Village enjoys thriving commerce and is a new rural community integrating agriculture, salt production, fishing, and residential living.
