Lan Tian Academy

Lan Tian Academy is a cultural relic protection unit of Meizhou City.

Lan Tian Academy is located at the end of Mi Street in Tangkeng Town, Fengshun County. It was established in the 27th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1847) through the initiative of local gentry member Ding Richang.

The academy follows a courtyard-style layout, featuring flush-gable roofs, post-and-lintel beam structures, and covers an area of 645 square meters. The main hall serves as the Confucian Temple, with the Hall of Virtuous Governance on the left and the Hall of Revered Goodness on the right, along with four wing rooms on either side. The roofs are covered with glazed tiles, and both interior and exterior eaves are adorned with bracket sets and square stone columns, with hanging lotus motifs under the eaves. The main gate features a glossy, mirror-like surface with exquisitely carved decorations. The gate lintel bears an inscribed plaque reading “Lan Tian Academy,” flanked by a pair of black, low-relief stone drums, and there are also two side gates, with a spacious front courtyard. According to the *Fengshun County Annals*, “In the 10th year of the Tongzhi reign, Fang Yao, commander of the Chaozhou garrison, allocated 5,000 taels of silver to generate interest income as regular funding for Lan Tian Academy.” In the 31st year of the Guangxu reign (1905), it was converted into Lan Tian Second-Class Primary School. In the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), the Hall of Virtuous Governance was changed to the Hall of Revered Goodness, and the Hall of Revered Goodness was changed to the Hall of Virtuous Governance.

In 1988, the Fengshun County People's Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.

On March 24, 2017, the Meizhou Municipal People's Government announced Lan Tian Academy as part of the fifth batch of Meizhou Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Units.

It lies 58 kilometers north of Meizhou City and 85 kilometers south of Shantou City. It serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the county and is also a showcase for Meizhou’s openness to the outside world. The town covers a total area of 41.18 square kilometers, including an urban area of 15 square kilometers.
