Fengshun Duzheng Hall

Fengshun Duzheng Hall is located in Koup Village, Dongliu Township, Fengshun County. Also known as Zhu Residence, it was built in the first year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1851) by Zhu Sanye Gong and is a type of Hakka enclosed round house known as a “wei long wu.” Oriented from east to west, it features three courtyards, four wings, and two enclosing structures, with 11 halls, 16 courtyards, and 65 rooms, covering a construction area of 5,472 square meters. The interior and exterior eaves are supported by bracket sets. The outer eaves feature painted wooden panels with colorful human figures and floral-bird motifs. It has a flush-gable roof with green-glazed edge trimming, while the main ridge, hip ridges, surrounding ridges, and corner ridges are adorned with glazed colorful dragons and phoenixes. The beams and frameworks are decorated with intricately carved openwork patterns of dragons, phoenixes, lions, crabs, flowers, grass, and human figures. Eaves are adorned with pendant lotus designs, giving it a unique style. The pillars also come in various styles: round stone pillars in the upper hall, flat stone pillars in the middle hall, square stone pillars in the lower hall, octagonal stone pillars at the entrance, and square stone pillars in the wings and kitchen areas. Two black stone drums stand on either side of the main gate. The front wall is inlaid with colorful ceramic murals and an openwork stone carving of “sparrows playing among plum blossoms,” both of high artistic value. A semi-circular pond lies 7 meters outside the front courtyard, connected to the two corner towers on either side via passageways.

The entire structure is built with lime-mixed rammed earth walls, which are then plastered. The halls and side corridors feature ten symmetrical openwork screen panels depicting floral and bird themes, all exquisitely decorated. The entire building is constructed on three stepped levels according to the terrain: the rear enclosing structure, the main body and left-right wings, and the front courtyard and pond corner towers. The back is higher than the front, with connecting corridors throughout, creating a rational layout that facilitates ventilation and lighting.

In July 1940, the rear enclosing structure of Duzheng Hall was bombed by Japanese aircraft, but it has since been largely restored.

In 1988, the Fengshun County People’s Government designated it as a cultural heritage protection unit.
