With its massive gates, towering towers, and high walls, it showcases the typical features of early medieval fortresses. As one of Cairo’s top attractions, the Citadel of Saladin may be the most renowned non-pharaonic monument in Egypt’s capital.

Within the Citadel of Saladin walls, there are three mosques, one of which is the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali. There are also countless other sights such as the Carriage Museum, the Military Museum, and the Garden Museum—all worth visiting. Visitors can even explore various defensive structures while enjoying panoramic views from above. The citadel also houses the splendid Gawhara Palace, also known as the Jewel Palace, named after Muhammad Ali’s last wife, Gawhara Hanem.

This fortress, built in 1814, once served as the private residence of Egypt’s leader, with walls adorned in lavish Turkish-style gold decorations. Its most unique feature is the Watch Hall, where, as the name suggests, the wall decorations form the shape of a clock.
