Al-Azhar Park

Al-Azhar Park is a public recreation area located in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Opened in May 2005, it covers an area of 30 hectares. Since its opening, the park has received numerous accolades, including being ranked among the world’s top 60 public spaces by Project for Public Spaces. On March 20, 2006, Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife made a public appearance at Al-Azhar Park.

Established with the support of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Al-Azhar Park transformed what was once a centuries-old garbage dump into a lush, green oasis. It is the city’s only significant park of its kind. It’s hard to put into words how different this park is from other public spaces in Cairo—vast gardens, green lawns, expansive lakes, soft Arabic music, and fountains in front of modern Islamic architecture. In addition to a few small cafés and an open-air theater, there is also a lovely restaurant offering stunning views over the medieval city, best enjoyed at sunset.

The park is home to many historical relics, such as the recently discovered wall of the Ayyubid dynasty, built 800 years ago by Salah El Din. You can also relax at one of the several cafés, enjoy five-star service, and take in the surroundings from carefully selected vantage points.
