The Gayer-Anderson Museum

The Gayer-Anderson Museum is located in Cairo, near the Ibn Tulun Mosque. It is named after British Major John Gayer-Anderson (R.G. Gayer-Anderson Pasha), who lived there from 1935 to 1942.

The Gayer-Anderson Museum is one of the best-preserved 17th-century residential buildings in Cairo and is also renowned for the extensive collection of items owned by Gayer-Anderson. This 17th-century building was constructed in 1632 and consists of two historic houses. John Gayer-Anderson purchased these two 16th-century private residences in the 1930s and renovated both in 1935 and 1942 respectively. Alongside the renovations, he furnished the homes with numerous antiques, treasures, furniture, glassware, crystal items, carpets, silk fabrics, and elaborately embroidered Arab garments. These antiquities and artworks form the museum’s most significant exhibits.

In addition to viewing the items collected by Gayer-Anderson, the building also features a series of themed rooms, such as an exquisitely tiled Persian room, a Damascus room adorned with lacquerware and gold items, and an elegant Chinese room, all of which are truly eye-opening.
