Khama Rhino Sanctuary

Established in 1992, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary is located in Botswana and was primarily founded to protect the endangered African rhinoceros. It is named after KHAMA, the first president of Botswana, which speaks volumes about the government's attention to this cause.

In the early 1990s, as rhinos had nearly vanished from Botswana, the first few were donated by South Africa. Although called a rhino sanctuary, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary is also home to many residents, as well as other endangered animals or those displaced due to expanding human and livestock populations. Currently, the sanctuary mainly hosts black and white rhinos, along with 30 other species of wildlife and 230 species of birds. These include foxes, zebras, egrets, wildebeest, black wildebeest, impala, roan antelope, leopards, brown hyenas, and jackals.

Covering an area of 4,300 hectares, the sanctuary mainly consists of grasslands and shrubland, with numerous boreholes ensuring ample water supply. It is located near a camp of the BDF (Botswana Defence Force), which provides 24-hour security. This offers the optimal natural environment for the African rhino. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is truly a rare gem and well worth exploring, attracting around eight thousand visitors from around the world each year.
