The 2012 London Olympic torch has completed its handover ceremony in Greece and arrived in the UK on May 18, beginning a 70-day relay that will pass through 1,021 cities and towns, with a total of 8,000 people taking part in this sacred task. The Olympic Games originated in Greece, while the Paralympic Games trace their roots to the UK. The 2012 London Paralympics have now entered the 100-day countdown to the celebration. The Paralympics, which began in 1948 with a sports event at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the UK, are being held in Britain for the first time this year. What started as a modest sports competition to aid the rehabilitation of spinal injury war veterans has since grown remarkably. In 2012, it is expected that two million people will come to watch the games, with 4,200 Paralympic athletes competing in 20 sports over 11 days.

British embassies and high commissions around the world are also marking this milestone of 100 days to go. In Botswana, Africa, the British High Commission has organized a 50-kilometer cycling race and a 100-meter sprint, inviting Paralympic athletes and rural communities to take part. In Bosnia and Herzegovina in Europe, a team from the British Embassy will compete against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national sitting volleyball team in the Paralympics, and will also engage in debates on disability issues with students at the University of Sarajevo. In the Philippines, the British Embassy has launched a photography competition titled “I Can,” showcasing people of all abilities participating in sports to demonstrate that disability does not have to be a barrier.
