Known as the loneliest tree in the world, the Lone Tree of Lake Wanaka enjoys immense popularity on social media. However, tragic news emerged yesterday: it was reported that someone used a saw to cut off several large branches, destroying the iconic tree’s graceful form on New Zealand’s South Island.

The lone tree was once relatively unknown. A few years ago, a photographer posted a photo of it on Instagram, which was then shared by the tourism board. Overnight, it went viral and became a favorite subject for influencers and photographers, propelling this willow tree to global fame. In truth, it continuously transforms through the seasons, light, and shadows, presenting ever-changing beauty.

Although its immense popularity has drawn all kinds of visitors to admire this delicate willow, some clearly do not come with good intentions. Local photographer Luisa Apanui visited the lake to take photos on Tuesday and found that several branches near the water had been cut off and discarded by the lakeside. It is currently believed that the branches were severed using either a handsaw or a chainsaw.

Speaking to the media, she said the incident has left local residents both angry and shocked: “This tree survived the floods in December, and now to see someone deliberately damage it is truly heartbreaking.”

Chris Hadfield, a member of the Wanaka Community Board, described the incident as “utterly senseless vandalism.” Local police stated they are investigating the act of property damage, but have yet to identify who cut the branches or determine their motive.
